View all 3 comments. I don’t need long misguided passages about what the boy is feeling. Images of parents who were so hungry and unfulfilled that they ate their own children. The characters are robotically waking, eating, partying, fucking, getting high and trying to sleep it all away. Blair picks me up from LAX and mutters this under her breath as she drives up the onramp.
More than once I closed the cover in disgust as Ellis seemed to wallow in this nihilistic celebration of vacuous, alienated, consumerist culture, only to see his judgement of what he was portraying: The book does remind me somehow of The Catcher in the Rye, because of the way it’s written and the fact that the main character seems to suppress his emotions in order to avoid facing real issues.
The protagonist, Clay, comes back to California from his New Hampshire college for summer break.
Set in Los Angeles in the early ‘s, Less than Zero has become a timeless classic. But, the entire thing might be worth the watch just for the amazing performance of Robert Downey Jr. Clay comes home for Christmas vacation from his Eastern college and re-enters a landscape of limitless privilege and absolute moral entropy, where zeroo drives Porches, dines at Spago, and snorts mountains of cocaine.
Christian Rummel does a fantastic job with the audiobook. I was disappointed in “Imperial Bedrooms,” but because I’m not yet ready to close the door, plan to read “The Rules of Attraction” next. The novel focuses on his interaction with his old friends and his family.

Ha, ha, all the power to him. But each character inhabits the same world, that of wealth and excess, full of shallow people and lack of genuine purpose.
