In this short story collection, McEwan explores human relationships, the grotesque and the sensual lurking in the corners of our oan. These stories do make for depressed reader but their realism and at the same time their dreamlike quality stand out. They provide a detailed image of McEwan as one of the best writers in modern Britain. Joseph Spinale hmm what goes to and fro. Books by Ian McEwan.

This is no Atonement. I personally found the book a bit predictable and other than the first story didn’t really enjoy it very much, but the subject matter nonetheless is taboo enough and described in such Hitchcockian detail that we are l I wonder if I am not as let down as others who wrote such venomous reviews because I have never read McEwan before? This is the weirdest story about an ape who can interact with his keeper Sally Klee Psychoticexplosive and sensual writing style: Somehow I missed it in the early years and then there must have been a gap when it was not easily available, so when I saw an old second-hand copy I grabbed it with some delight.

In Between the Sheets by Ian McEwan

I enjoyed this book because I felt that it was very well crafted. I would recommend this book but not to the prude of heart. I guess I have a very different view from most people here.

Lists with This Book. Nothing here is especially well-written. In the remaining story that I enjoyed most, “Psychopolis” – a tale of ennui as a traveller from the UK experiences L. The second story, Reflections of a Kept Ape is one of my two favorites. Finally, Psychopoliswhich coolly begins with a woman asking the narrator to chain her to the bed, quickly loses its grip on the reader and devolves into a parody of Southern California late s parties.

On the other hand Dead as They Come is a very graphic novel but it is so strangely fascinating that it makes you want to continue reading Aug 26, Maciek rated it it was ok Shelves: To see what your friends thought of this book, please sign up.

I enjoyed other stories in the book too, but the two mentioned above were ones that seemed to have lodged themselves in my brain.

As absurd as the premises of the stories were, McEwan manages to make them “believable” and yet intriguing through his description. May 29, Mcewzn Koon rated it liked it. Sabanae ask other readers questions about In Between the Sheetsplease sign up.

These two are further character studies and both stand out because of their subject matter, but also because McEwan places the reader inside the narrators’ minds – their feelings, thoughts, insecurities, and passions are acutely and uncomfortably laid bare for the reader. I picked this up while visiting Dublin.
